It’s been a while since we’ve published one of these, but with lockdown still trudging on, there seems no better time than now to give out some recommendations based on what I’ve been watching recently – and as I’m sure is the same with you all, there’s been a lot. Let’s get into it:

Films of the month: With so many seen this month, it’s super hard to narrow it down to just a few, but there’s some clear standouts here. Having seen The Lion King before, I knew what to expect, but the emotional beats all still hit perfectly, the songs are phenomenal, and the whole thing has aged wonderfully – it’s certainly one of Disney’s very best, and will take a lot to ever be topped. But in terms of new films, High Life was an absolute treat. Robert Pattinson is great but Clare Denis’ direction really steals the show, posing some fascinating questions about humanity pushed to moral extremes in the most extraordinary of circumstances. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s really rewarding and demands repeat viewings. The last film pick is Super Dark Times, a Netflix sleeper hit that combines gut-wrenching tension with some really human moments, particularly around adolescent guilt and how traumatic events can carve new, undesirable paths for impressionable people. It’s best not knowing much going into it, but it’s a wonderful experience unlike anything I’ve seen before.

TV Shows

  1. Better Call Saul S5
  2. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Mystery
  3. The Simpsons S7
  4. Noughts + Crosses E1-5
  5. Star Wars: The Clone Wars S7 E1-10
  6. The Vampire Diaries S1

TV shows of the month: A particularly busy month again, but there’s plenty of good stuff here. In terms of drama, this season of Better Call Saul has been unrivalled and it’s a shame it’s gone for another year. Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman takes some really interesting turns this time, but it’s the supporting cast that make this so special: characters such as Kim and Nacho are so grippingly written, and their arcs over this season have set up a totally enthralling final season – whenever it ends up coming out. April was also the month of Disney+ bingeing for me, hence the appearance of The Simpsons and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I’ll talk more about TCW in next month’s segment as the final episodes have only just dropped, but it’s great. And you already know how good peak Simpsons is, with season 7 containing some iconic episodes such as Marge Be Not Proud and Summer of 4 Ft. 2 – but you’ll be hearing more about The Simpsons very soon…
