Superman/Batman: Apocalypse was the first Superman animated film I have seen, but I can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed after seeing the finished product. The story was interesting enough, and I liked the relationship between Kal-El and Kara Zor-El, but I feel like Batman wasn’t featured enough to deserve his name in the title. I can see why this was packaged in a Superman animated box set, because Batman is only really featured in the opening scene, dotted around in the middle and then in the climactic fight against Darkseid and Apokalips. I liked the dynamic between Superman and Wonder Woman, because the relationship clearly developed over the course of the film, however I feel like the pacing was slightly off. It was fine until Superman and Supergirl arrived in Smallville, where another long fight scene occurred not too long after the previous one, and I feel like this spoiled the otherwise fine pacing. The voice acting was generally solid, with a particularly good performance from Tim Daly as Superman, but unfortunately I felt like Kevin Conroy fell a little flat as Batman this time around, as his performance was particularly wooden, and it was hard to differentiate between his feelings as it was just so monotone, but this is the only time I have ever witnessed this, and I have seen Conroy in a lot of Batman media, so I’m not particularly worried, but I will be listening out for a better performance in the sequel.
I give Superman/Batman: Apocalypse 7 out of 10.
