Well, haven’t the past few days been packed with film news?

When Ted, a live-action and CGI mashup from Family Guy creater Seth MacFarlane came out in 2012, it was a roaring success, making over $500 million worldwide. Trying to capitalise on Ted‘s success, MacFarlane then cranked out A Million Ways to Die in the West, a Western comedy that definitely didn’t receive the reception that Ted did, making just $86 million worldwide. Perhaps playing it safe, his next release is Ted 2, which I am personally very excited for because I was a fan of the first instalment. A badly rendered trailer was leaked in November 2014, but finally, in January 2015, we have a full teaser trailer for Ted 2. Check it out below if you haven’t already:

Here’s what we thought of the trailer.

Personally, I thought the trailer was pretty darn good. Normally, comedy sequels struggle to retain the charm and wit of the usually successful original, for example Dumb and Dumber To, but it seems like Ted 2 has managed to hold onto its trademark humour. As expected, the eponymous stuffed bear is just fantastic, and the relationship between Mark Wahlberg’s John and Ted is as funny as ever. It seems like the characters have moved on after the events of the first film, most notably by the absence of Mila Kunis’ Lori, and have opened a new chapter in their lives, which is very exciting. However, this time, the adventures of a man and his stuffed bear seem to be branching out. The first film was mainly set in the character’s houses and the occasional party, whereas in the trailer alone,we have seen court rooms, a sperm bank and an Interstellar-esque cornfield.

Leading on from this, some of the characters seen in the first film appear to have a much greater role. For example, Ted’s beau Tami-Lynn, played by Jessica Barth, was not that big a character in the first film, but here, she is seen living with Ted, marrying him and even trying to get a child under their collar. I think this is a really interesting idea, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out in the real thing. Another character with a bigger role is Flash Gordon himself, Sam J. Jones. His role in the first film was primarily as a running joke, and judging by the trailer, that’s how it’s going to be in the sequel, as he is here seen as the vicar at the wedding.

Aside from some characters getting greater roles, some very interesting characters, and some big names, are also thrown into the pipeline. Amanda Seyfried, who worked with MacFarlane on A Million Ways to Die in the West, is playing Samantha Jackson, who appears to be Ted’s lawyer, but also apparently a friend. I thought the whole ‘Samuel L. Jackson’ gag was just brilliant, and if the full-length film can emulate the style and frequency of humour as the trailer, I think fans of the foul-mouthed bear are in for a treat. Another new face is the legendary Morgan Freeman, who, according to IMDb, is playing a currently unnamed character, but from the trailer he seems to be playing some sort of attorney or court-related character, similar to Seyfried.

I am going to be honest and say that when I wrote my article regarding my top 5 most anticipated films of 2015, I totally forgot that Ted 2 was coming out at all, it had completely dropped off my radar. That is a shame, because even though it may not have made the list, it certainly would’ve received an honourable mention. I am looking forward to Ted 2 very much, and I will definitely see it when it comes out in July 2015. If this trailer is anything to go by, fans of the foul-mouthed stuffed bear are in for one hell of a treat.
