Film fans are in for a treat in 2015. From Oscar-nominated gems such as Birdman and Whiplash landing in January, the Oscars not far away, and a summer full of blockbuster franchises, there is no better year to get into your local cinema that 2015. Today, I’m going to be listing the 5 films I can’t wait to see in cinemas over the next 12 months. Please note, this is all my own opinion, so I appreciate if you feel differently, and also since this blog is based in the UK, films like Foxcatcher have not been released yet, so some films the USA had in December 2014 may well feature in this list. Without any further ado, let’s get into the list:
5. Ant-Man
There are so many incredible films coming out this year, but one I’m looking forward to most is Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man. Pitched as the closer to Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is due to land in July 2015, starring Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, the second incarnation of the insect-sized hero. Although there was quite a lot of backlash over the recently-released trailer, I quite enjoyed it, and even though the film’s stakes will be lower after the sure-to-be epic that is Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios have been on insatiable form recently, and with Phase 3 announced and cast, the domination of Marvel doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon, so let’s hope Ant-Man isn’t the beginning of a downward spiral.
4. Spectre
Although we still don’t know very much about James Bond’s 24th adventure, from the glimmers of what we have seen, it is shaping up to be amazing. With a brilliant cast lead by Daniel Craig and Christoph Waltz, alongside Skyfall‘s Sam Mendes back on to direct, this is shaping up to be a thrilling film, due for release in October. However, after the Sony Pictures hacks, there were rumours that the script was not up to scratch, but after a delightful 23rd entry into the long-running spy series, I’m sure we’ll not be disappointed when Spectre hits our screens in Q4 2015.
3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
No 2015 list would be complete without this. Episode VII of the legendary Star Wars saga has had so much hype surrounding it, and after the incredible trailer was released over Thanksgiving weekend, expectations are sky high. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of Abrams’ latest, Star Trek: Into Darkness, from what we have seen of The Force Awakens, we can tell it is trying to be very faithful to the Original Trilogy, and as long as they stick to this, alongside the guidance of George Lucas (thank God he’s not directing though), I’m sure Abrams and co. can pull off one of the greatest franchise relaunches of all time. Who can forget the moment in the trailer when the Millennium Falcon burst into frame, alongside the timeless John Williams score? Star Wars: The Force Awakens is certainly a one to watch when it lands in December 2015.
2. Birdman
I know this came out in the USA in 2014, and it is currently out in the UK at the time of writing, but I haven’t had the chance to see Birdman yet, but believe me, I cannot wait. Having racked up an incredible 9 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Leading Actor, Birdman is a satire and commentary on the film and theatre industry, and judging from the trailers, nobody, not even the unassuming viewer, is safe. Birdman has reignited Michael Keaton’s career, and has really solidified the careers of greats such as Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, so this is an absolute must to watch at some point over the course of 2015.
1. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Who’s really that surprised that Avengers: Age of Ultron has topped this list? The trailers have been absolutely incredible, the cast is fantastic, and the implications that this film has on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is enormous. Although there have been rumours that Joss Whedon originally didn’t want to do a sequel to 2012’s Avengers Assemble, and that Idris Elba was very unhappy during his time with Marvel, this is still shaping up to be an absolute delight that I can’t wait to watch.
Honourable mentions
Unfortunately, not all of 2015’s biggest films could make the list, so I’ve got a few honourable mentions that just missed out on the top 5.
