A few months ago, we reported on the then-newly announced ensemble cast of DC Comics’ upcoming Suicide Squad film, due to land in 2016, as will Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Bad news has struck the production of the film, it has appeared. As of 15th January 2015, Tom Hardy, who was signed on to play Rick Flag, has departed from the film. We were very much looking forward to seeing Hardy’s portrayal of DC’s tough guy, mainly to see the similarities between his performance in Suicide Squad to his performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Critics were lukewarm regarding his performance in 2012’s trilogy-closer (which we ranked – link below), therefore we were excited to see his second attempt at taming the monster that is DC Comics. However, it was not to be, due to scheduling conflicts in the big Brit’s schedule. He is currently shooting The Revenant, the latest from the Oscar-nominated director of Birdman, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, meaning he will be unable to make the shoot for Suicide Squad, which is due to begin mid-April.
Rumours are circulating that Nighcrawler star Jake Gyllenhaal is set to take over as Flag, but as of yet there is no confirmation of anything, and we should take these reports with a grain of salt. Of course, be sure to stick around for any further updates.
Update 17/01/15: Rumours are circulating that Hardy left the production of Suicide Squad because it is going to focus on the Joker and Deadshot. Follow us on Twitter @thatfilmbloguk for the latest updates on this story.
