Making headlines this week was British actor Idris Elba, well know for his roles in Thor, Prometheus and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. Firstly, he told The Telegraph that filming simultaneously on Thor: The Dark World and Mandela was “really weird”, and “torture”, and whilst on set reshooting for Thor: TDW, he was thinking “24 hours ago, I was Mandela”. Whilst he may have stopped there, he went on to reveal his role in the upcoming Marvel 2015 superpower Avengers: Age of Ultron, saying “I’m in Avengers. And I’m doing a scene with Chris Hemsworth [plays Thor] and Tom Hiddleston [plays Loki]”. This landed him in hot water with the director of Avengers, Joss Whedon, telling Vulture “should he receive an email from me, there might be an attitude of scold”.
Is this a case of an unhappy lead, bonded to making this films by contract, displaying his frustration with the filmmakers, or is it just a genuine mistake on his part? In my opinion, it probably wasn’t the smartest decision to reveal such key information when there previously was a shroud of mystery surrounding the topic. Also, I don’t think complaining about his Thor: The Dark World experience was right either. If I were an actor, getting the opportunity to feature in films as popular as Marvel’s, I would try to enjoy the experience and not complain, especially when considering how much he was paid once the cameras stopped rolling.
