Big news coming out of the now-defunct Fox X-Men universe today, as a new release date for the long-delayed film The New Mutants is revealed.

The superhero horror, previously slated for April 3, 2020, was delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen Marvel Studios totally delay its Phase 4 slate, with other big franchises such as The Fast and the Furious and DC’s upcoming The Batman also being pushed back.

Starring Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film follows five mutants as they learn to control their newfound powers – with a horror slant, as they are held captive in a research facility and forced to face their demons – with literal demons and plenty of hallucinations looking likely.

A tweet from the official New Mutants account shared a new poster for the Josh Boone-directed film, while also providing a new release date of August 28, 2020 – just under three years after the first trailer was released.

This announcement comes after weeks of speculation as to whether the film would end up on Disney+, and chatter among fans that the production was totally cursed. Its first release date was April 13, 2018, but was delayed twice – to February 2019 and then August 2019 – to avoid competing with other X-Men properties, Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and to allow for extensive reshoots. Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox last year, it was again pushed to April of this year – and until the virus pandemic emerged, it looked set to make that date.

But now a new August release date is set, it seems years of speculation about The New Mutants may finally be put to an end – and after so many delays, it seems like this X-Men spin-off might actually make this release date.
