The Best Superhero Video Games

Well, here we are. The age of the superhero movie is well and truly upon us, as cinemagoers are treated to some of the biggest characters in comic-book history on the big screen, doing what they do best. One area of the superhero genre that is perhaps more overlooked, however, is the video games. Today, we’re going to be listing some of the best games featuring superheroes that have graced our consoles. Note that these are in no particular order, and we’ve kept it to one game per franchise.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) – A game that many consider the best of this genre, this adaption of Sam Raimi’s 2004 hit arguably eclipsed the success of the film it was based off. From the addictive, tight web-swinging, the rich and enthralling open world to the fantastic fight mechanics, this game really paved the way for some of the genre games we are treated to today, and deserves its place as one of the greatest film tie-ins. Sure, the voice acting and graphics have aged a bit, but it says a lot that every open-world Spider-Man game since has used the same game mechanics. It’s really no surprise: this game tweaked the problems of the 2002 original had, and really shines, even to this day.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013) – This really is a great one. NetherRealm Studios, who had adopted the Mortal Kombat series just a few years before, managed to transport the tight, refined fighting mechanics of their flagship series into the DC Comics universe. Unlike most brawlers, this tells an interesting and unique story, packing in tons of fan service, and is one of the most accessible fighter games in recent memory. Although the PS4 servers are a bit sparse nowadays, the mobile port is one of the deepest mobile games you can download today, and the interweaving between both platforms is really engaging. Even if you aren’t the biggest DC aficionado, this is one to check out.

InFamous (2009) – Unlike most of the superhero games out there, this isn’t based off of any comics, and is entirely the original creation of developer Sucker Punch. While it lacks lore, InFamous has a really interesting morality system, and some of the decisions you can make in the games engaging story are deeply impactful, with plenty of twists along the way. Despite its age, it still outshines its follow-up games, and although its been compared to other similar games (Prototype anyone?), it manages to be one of the best reasons to own a PS3.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) – One of the biggest complaints about the X-Men film series is that arguably the spearhead of the team – Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine – has never had the chance to be as brutal and violent as in the comics. And while fans’ prayers may be answered in the form of an R-rated solo film, for now fans have the tie-in video game to 2009’s frankly dreadful X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This game is simply so much fun: there’s absolutely nothing to stop the player cutting enemies up into tiny slices, and seeing Wolverine heal in real-time (bones exposed and all) is really refreshing. If you’re looking for a gory, gruesome but bloody fun time with the most famous X-Man, look no further.

Batman: Arkham City (2011) – I’m sure none of you are surprised that this one made the list. Arkham City is not just one of the best superhero games, but arguably one of the best action games, in recent memory. Developer Rocksteady Studios have perfected Batman as a character, bringing fan-favourites Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in as Batman and the Joker respectively, and the fascinating, shocking story and the much-imitated combat system only accentuate this. Its open world is small but dense, and there’s always a villain to fight or a thug to KO. From its thrilling opening to its jaw-dropping climax, this is one of the best examples of Batman lore in any medium, and quite possibly the best the superhero game genre has to offer.
