I didn’t plan on writing an article about Netflix’s Daredevil series, but having watched the first episode, I feel compelled to. You know why? Because it was fantastic.
Straight off the bat, Daredevil is nothing like anything else ever before seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is unbelievably dark and depressing, with plenty of blood, guts and swearing (with one scene in particular lingering in the mind), but this all helps to reinforce the character of Daredevil as arguably the darkest Marvel character. The design of the show is flawless, the characters are really likeable (mostly) and on the whole incredibly well acted, especially Charlie Cox as the eponymous vigilante, but also spectacular was Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson.
Although it was only the show’s first episode, the story was just how I like it – full to the brim with character development and dialogue, with a sprinkling of superbly choreographed and directed action in between. Some parts were hard to follow, particularly that ominous bad-guy meeting on the roof which was a bit vague – and I imagine it would be even harder to adjust if you didn’t know anything about Daredevil as a character, but luckily I know my stuff. Nonetheless, it would be nice if the show was a bit more accessible to those uninitiated in The Man Without Fear.
I’ll admit that I have a soft spot for 2004’s Daredevil with Ben Affleck, and I’m a huge fan of Daredevil as a character: I’d go as far to say he’s my favourite Marvel hero, so I’m sure you can imagine how ecstatic I felt all the way through the first episode, entitled Into the Ring. However, I’d say my highlight was the final montage, showing the viewer just how much is left to come in the show’s remaining 12 episodes.
I loved the show’s action, I loved the show’s script, but most of all, I loved the fact that Daredevil – a character ridiculed for years – is back.
