Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games franchise has captured the imagination of readers and cinema-goers worldwide, with the books becoming instant bestsellers, and the film series grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide so far, from only two of the four films due to be released. The series has made an international superstar of Jennifer Lawrence, and is one of the final completed performances of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. As you can see, these films have an untouchable reputation.
However, not even diehard fans could’ve seen this coming. Earlier today (November 7th), Lionsgate – the company behind the series – announced that The Hunger Games will be coming to London -to a theatre specifically built to accommodate the show – in the summer of 2016. The show will be produced by Robin de Lavita, known recently for the production of the play ANNE, the first authorised show about the life of Anne Frank.
This is, in our opinion, a very big gamble. The amount of money that will be spent on this project is unthinkable, and if it bombs (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark anyone?), the whole reputation of the series will be in jepoardy. However, details are still very scarce, and I’m sure the details will become a lot clearer as we approach the first show in summer 2016.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released on November 21st 2014. The Hunger Games Stage Show will be released in Summer 2016.
