Top Gun 3 Release Date Speculation

At the time of writing, Top Gun 3 does not have a release date. However, it is in production, so we can expect a Top Gun 3 release date around 2028.

Fortunately, there’s not too much to speculate about because Top Gun 3 has already been officially confirmed. It has been in pre-production as far back as early 2024, with Maverick co-writer Ehren Krugen returning to pen the script and Cruise and Kosinski both eyed to come back. Other members of the cast including Miles Teller and Glen Powell are likely to come back, though the latter’s stratospheric rise to stardom could make securing a deal more difficult.

Since then, we’ve heard a little bit more about Top Gun 3‘s production. In a May 2025 interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Mission Impossible director and Maverick co-writer Christopher McQuarrie confirmed that the story had already been decided upon.

“It’s already in the bag… I already know what it is,” he said of the new movie’s plot. “I thought it would be [hard], and Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, ‘Mhm actually.’ We had one conversation about it and the framework is there.”

Therefore, it shouldn’t be too long until the script is finalised and Top Gun 3 enters production. After all, both McQuarrie and Cruise are now done with The Final Reckoning, and Kosinski’s upcoming F1 movie is just a few weeks from releasing.

Without much else on the horizon, it’ll likely be a clear run to Top Gun 3. That’s why we predict the Top Gun 3 release date will be around 2028. It’s enough time for the movie to be written, filmed, and edited, so look out for it in a few years’ time. Of course, as soon as we hear any more official news, we’ll update this article.
