Homebound Story Explained

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound is based on a real-life article written by the journalist Basharat Peer, which was published in the New York Times in 2020. It takes place just as India’s strict national lockdowns for the COVID-19 pandemic came into effect, with millions of people travelling home to make it before the rules took hold.

The film follows two friends, Mohammed Shoaib Ali (played by Ishan Khatter) and Chandan Kumar (Vishal Jethwa), who join the local police with a goal of boosting their status within India’s class system. They’re both lower class and want to provide for their families, but soon they grow apart as personal desires and jealousy get in the way.
