With the first movie out now in cinemas and taking the box office by storm, musical fans are already looking ahead to Wicked Part 2. We know that the sequel will take us up to the events of The Wizard of Oz, leaving one huge question that needs an answer: who will play Dorothy in Wicked Part 2?

At the time of writing, it has not been announced who will play Dorothy in Wicked Part 2.
Since the movie has already been filmed, however, it’s not a case of the producers still waiting to cast the right performer. In fact, both Wicked movies were shot back-to-back in 2022 and 2023, meaning the second film will currently be in post-production.
We’d wager that the Dorothy actress will likely be announced in the first trailer for Wicked Part 2. After all, it’s bound to be one of the most contentious topics regarding the film, and a difficult secret to keep completely until its premiere and release given Dorothy’s role. Just look at how Disney announced Dafne Keen’s involvement in Deadpool & Wolverine—the secret was too big to keep, so they let it out via a cameo in a trailer.
Of course, there’s also every chance that Universal won’t cast a new actress as Dorothy in Wicked Part 2. Digital de-aging is all the rage, even if it’s quite controversial among fans, so using Judy Garland’s likeness could be a viable, if unpopular, option. We’ve seen the goods and bads of the technology in movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Captain America: Civil War, and it has certainly developed in the years since. If Universal doesn’t want to burden a new actor with such big shoes, this could be the route.
That said, given Dorothy has a fairly significant part to play in the second half of Wicked’s story, dedicating so much time and money to full digital recreations of Garland is likely an unfeasible prospect. We expect to see a new actress step into the role properly, but as of the first movie’s release we still don’t know who it’ll be.
