If you love the Christmas season, you’ll no doubt be desperate to know The Grinch 2 release date. Whether you adore the Jim Carrey original, directed by none other than Ron Howard, or the 2018 animated version, there’s nothing better than the premise of a sequel. Let’s see when, or if, a follow-up is on the way.
The Grinch 2 Release Date Countdown
The Grinch 2 does not have a release date because it has not been greenlit by Universal Pictures.
It may come as bad news to some, but it’s impossible to say whether Benedict Cumberbatch will return as his 3D animated version of the Grinch. It has been nearly six years since the movie released and no details on a sequel, so it could be a case of one-and-done.
It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise, either, because Illumination has been incredibly busy in the years since making The Grinch. Since 2018, the studio has released six movies, with two more in the works for 2026 and 2027, respectively. Those are a sequel to 2023’s hit Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minions 3, which are bound to be a higher priority than a follow-up to The Grinch.
Therefore, it’s a case of having to wait and see whether the producers come up with a good enough story to continue the franchise, or holding out for yet another cinematic re-interpretation of the Dr. Seuss book. The 2018 movie was a huge financial success, grossing over $520 million from a $75 million production budget, so it’s not like the first one was a flop with no chance of a continuation.
That said, there is plenty of source material for a sequel to go off. In 2023, a sequel to the original booked, called How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, came out. This time around the Grinch is all for Christmas, as he goes to extreme lengths to have the best Christmas tree in Whoville. If there is to be a sequel, it’ll likely go off that book’s narrative.
