It’s nearly time to dive back into Middle-earth, as The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is nearly upon us! The first canon LotR movie since 2015’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, this anime film expands upon the lore by exploring the world over a century before the trilogy takes place. Let’s take a look at the movie’s release date, cast, plot, and where to watch it online.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Release Date

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is slated to release on December 13, 2024.

As this release date closes in, it’s hard to imagine that there will be any delays to push the movie into 2025. It was initially meant to release on April 12, 2024 but was pushed back by over six months as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike of summer 2023. Since all of the voice work will now be finished, there’s no reason to expect another delay.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Trailer

The first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim dropped online on August 22, 2024. The teaser starts by showing footage from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, before moving onto original scenes from the new movie. You can watch it right here:

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Plot & Setting

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set exactly 183 years before Frodo’s adventure in the beloved trilogy of movies. It hasn’t been confirmed which age of Middle-earth history it takes place in, but the movie is set several millennia after The Rings of Power, the Prime Video TV series.

The War of the Rohirrim follows Helm Hammerhead, the ruler of Rohan – a civilisation of humans that plays a big role in wider Lord of the Rings lore. His kingdom is challenged by Wulf, who leads the Dunlendings to avenge his father. He is a human too, with the film pitting clans of men together instead of the elves, dwarves, and orcs we grew so used to in the film series.

Based on this premise and the information gleaned from the first trailer, we can expect Game of Thrones-style scheming and double-crossing as competing groups vie for control of Rohan.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Cast

There aren’t many big-name voice actors in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, aside from Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand himself.

You’ve also got Gaia Wise as his daughter Hèra, Luke Pasqualino (Skins, Our Girl) as Wulf, Mirando Otto returning as the narrator Éowyn from the original trilogy, and Shaun Dooley as Wulf’s treasonous father, Freca. Saruman is confirmed to appear in the film, but without the inimitable Sir Christopher Lee, it’s hard to say who will voice him.

There’s much more recognisable talent within the crew, namely from director Kenji Kamiyama. He’s best known for his work on the Blade Runner: Black Lotus 3D anime, an episode of Star Wars: Visions, and several contributions to the Ghost in the Shell and Ultraman franchises. As such, it’s a pretty big name bound to deliver the goods.

Peter Jackson, who directed both Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, returns as an executive producer alongside Fran Walsh, who co-wrote the first trilogy. Philippa Boyens, who also co-wrote the trilogy, signed on as a producer way back in 2021 when the project was announced.
